White Hawk Retreat

A carefully crafted outdoor escape, built for gathering, unwinding and everything in between.

A space with potential, waiting for the right plan

This client in South Boulder was looking for a landscape design that truly reflected their vision — something their previous designer wasn’t able to capture. They needed someone who would listen carefully and create a design that aligned with their personal style and functional needs.

At the time they reached out, their property featured an upper deck extending from their outdoor kitchen and bedroom, wrapping around the backyard. Below, they had a lawn area. While the structure was in place, it lacked flow, cohesion and thoughtful details. By carefully understanding their goals and refining the vision, we delivered a design that exceeded expectations — on the first try.

Blending elevated design with natural beauty

We transformed this backyard into a seamless blend of functional outdoor living and natural beauty, creating a space where every element — fire, water, stone and greenery — feels balanced and intentional.

This project started in early spring, and several unexpected snowstorms pushed back the timeline. Despite these delays, we carefully adjusted the schedule to keep progress moving forward.

We began by modifying the existing deck, adding wide, inviting steps that naturally lead down to a spacious paver patio — the heart of the retreat. A custom pergola was installed, providing a shaded escape with a built-in misting system for summer cooling and a heater for crisp Colorado evenings. Beneath it, a round firepit serves as a cozy focal point for gatherings.

A fully equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with a grill, mini fridge, and granite countertop, makes outdoor dining effortless. Nearby, a tranquil fountain adds a soothing touch, while carefully placed granite boulders give the space an organic, mountain-inspired aesthetic.

For privacy, we sourced and installed towering 18’ - 20’ Colorado Blue Spruces — a challenge that required patience but delivered instant seclusion. Additional evergreens, Prairie Fire Crabapple trees and vibrant perennials bring life and color throughout the seasons.

To unify the space, we designed flagstone paths connecting the deck, patio and lawn. The existing fence was extended to enclose the new landscape, and behind the scenes, irrigation and drainage systems were put in place to ensure long-term sustainability.
